Just download Audacity (free) and open any MP3 in it, shorten it down to <30 seconds, export it as an M4A, CMD-I and change it’s extension to M4R and drag them into iTunes & Sync.

It’s surprisingly easy. You’ll need the free ‘LAME’ plugin that Audacity asks for the first time.
